Federal job losses? ‘So be it’

House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday that the GOP plans to “get serious” about government spending, and if that means eliminating government jobs, “so be it.”

The Ohio Republican said he does not care if federal employees lose their jobs as a result of the GOP plan to reduce government spending by $60 billion compared to last year.

Boehner specifically said it would be fine if government jobs created under the Obama administration were eliminated, citing a figure ten times higher than what the Washington Post has reported.

“Over the last two years since President Obama has taken office, the federal government has added 200,000 new federal jobs,” Boehner said. “If some of those jobs are lost in this, so be it. We’re broke. It’s time for us to get serious about how we’re spending the nation’s money.”

Democrats and unions have previously slammed Republicans for their willingness to cut the federal workforce.

Boehner said he didn’t have an estimate of how many might lose their jobs — there are roughly 3 million federal workers spread across the country.

Clarification: This story was updated to note that the figure Speaker of the House John Boehner cites as the number of jobs created under the Obama administration is far higher than previous press reports.
