Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I do hope that they've been scrubbing the shit out of the Gamebryo engine, or are using Tech5 for some of it, Oblivion was such a 'this is next-gen' type game that if a game five years later on still looks quite similar to it, it will be a slight disappointment.

Uzi, that story is inspired. :hat:

I seem to remember someone on here saying that they spent a huge amount of time in Oblivion without wearing any trousers and only realised by randomly going to 3rd person at some point. :)

I pretty much screwed up my Oblivion character by doing the whole first section in the prison where it decides what character you are, crouching without realising it. It made me a thief or something and gave me a lot of sneak points, I didn't even realise I'd been crouching the whole time until after I'd gone outside...

From Bethesda's twitter:

"Seeing lots of speculation about #tesv game engine. It's brand new... and it's spectacular!"

"But in keeping with previous ES games the biggest threat to the world won't be dragons or gods but will be the engine itself."

I'm really hoping this game will be good and won't be as buggy as some of their previous efforts.

How much can you modify a game engine? That isn't a shitty rhetorical question by the way.

Is it likely to look fairly similar to Fallout 3 because it shares the engine or could it potentially be much better looking?

Well I don't know if this actually answers your question but look this is Morrowind unmodded:

And this is Morrowind, same engine, with a few snazzy mods and lighting effects applied:

Of course this is all moot since Skyrim will be using an all-new engine anyway :D

I can't wait to see in-game footage hurry up Bethesda :omg:

On that note I actually loaded up morrowind on the PC yesterday. Without mods, just the vanilla version running at 720p or so. It actually didn't look that bad- the worst thing was though one of bethesda's constant flaws. The animation. Every character walked like they had shit in their pants- if you thought Oblivion or Falllout walking/running animation was bad, go back to morrowind.

Still the freedom of the game was so refreshing. I forgot how quickly it starts. You're on a ship within a two min intro. You're off the ship 30 seconds later. You create your class and do one or two other things and you're done. Go and do whatever the hell you want, with very little hand holding either. And knowing that there were places immediately in the world you could find enemies who would one hit KO you. And amazing loot. They're already abandoned the insane levelling of oblivion in fallout, so hopefully they'll go ever further in Skyrim in the danger and amazing treasure you could find if you were brave enough.

Plus I wanna steal extra special trinkets for my future Skyrim girlfriend

To be brutally honest I couldn't find a decent screenshot of unmodded Morrowind on short notice and I used one from the Xbox version  But you know, that was what morrowind on PC looked like on medium settings back when it came out.

I just hope they get rid of that thing where the animation gets more stuttery the the further away it is. Necessary in 2000, maybe. Not any more though.

And good grief, I hope they can manage more than a handful of npcs onscreen at a time. The capital city in Oblivion felt like a ghost town

YOU HAVE THE HANDS OF A HEALER. LOOK AT THE MUSCLES ON YOU. MUDCRABS. FILTHY CREATURES.

Good news on the engine front

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-12-13-elder-scrolls-v-tech-took-many-years

Over the weekend Bethesda said Elder Scrolls V is powered by a new engine. "We can now confirm that the TES V: Skyrim engine is all-new. And it looks fantastic," Bethesda community man Nick Breckon tweeted. "It's a new graphics/gameplay engine built internally. We'll have more details down the road."
