CANCUN, Mexico
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The #23 Green Bay (4-0) women's basketball team
tipped off the Caribbean Challenge in dominant fashion with a 78-44 win over
Hartford (1-4) Thursday.
Kayla Tetschlag
(Sheboygan, Wis.) and Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) sparked the Phoenix to an
18-4 run throughout the first five minutes of play. Tetschlag scored Green Bay's
first six points before finishing the game leading all scorers with 16 points
throughout 22 minutes of play. Wojta finished with 13 while Adrian Ritchie (De
Pere, Wis.) added 11.
"It was really good to see Julie and Kayla come out and look
like themselves on the court, they really played hard," said head coach Matt
Bollant.
Though Green Bay was outrebounded in the first half, the
Phoenix forced 19 turnovers and capitalized with 24 points off Hawks' miscues.
Green Bay finished the half with 28 points in the paint before heading to the
locker room with a 44-17 lead.
The second half was much like the first as the Phoenix
started with an 8-0 run and maintained its intensity throughout. Every player stepped on the floor for at
least four minutes while 10 players scored for the Phoenix.
Green Bay shot a perfect 11-11 from the free-throw line
while shooting 49 percent from the field. The Phoenix scored 46 of its 78
points in the paint and 32 off Hartford's 28 turnovers. The Phoenix led by as
many as 37 with 10:36 remaining in the contest.
Career Day: Sophomore
Jenny Gilbertson (Wabasha, Minn.) scored her first career points in a Phoenix
uniform in the first half. With 1:47 remaining, Gilbertson sank two free throws
before adding a three pointer in the second half. Gilberston finished the game
playing a career-high 18 minutes.
Tenacious Tandem: Wojta
and Tetschlag combined for 29 points, seven assists and seven steals. Both
players sparked the Phoenix early as Tetschlag had 14 points in the first half
while Wojta added 11.
"Julie is my favorite player to play with because she's such
a good passer," said Tetschlag.
Countdown to the
Club: After scoring four points against Hartford, Celeste Hoewisch
(Hortonville, Wis.) is just 11 points away from 1,000 career points. Today
Hoewisch played in her 100th game in a Green Bay uniform.
