Area roundup: Redmon helps Gonzaga edge WSU

Katelan Redmon hit two free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining to give Gonzaga a 67-65 women’s basketball victory over Washington State on Sunday at the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Honolulu.

The Bulldogs (6-4) finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, while the Cougars (1-6) finished 1-2.

Redmon led all scorers with 22 points. Janelle Bekkering added 12 points with nine rebounds, while Courtney Vandersloot had 11 points and seven assists.

Jazmine Perkins led WSU with 14 points, Sage Romberg added 11 and April Cook contributed 10.

A game in which the biggest lead was six points came down to the final seconds. WSU’s Ireti Amojo hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to tie the game at 65. Vandersloot then drove the length of the court and found Redmon open on the baseline. Redmon drove to the basket and was fouled on the play.

After Redmon hit both free throws, the Cougars attempted an inbounds pass to half court that was picked off by Kayla Standish.

The Bulldogs return to action Friday, playing Eastern Washington in Cheney at 7 p.m., and the Cougars host Nevada on Sunday at 1 p.m.
