TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Sophomore guard Sam Arnold broke a 58-58 tie late in the second half against Indiana State on Monday night with a three-point play and the Michigan women's basketball team held on for its first road victory of the season.

With less than a minute to play, Arnold drove to the hoop for the go-ahead basket, was fouled on the play, and made the ensuing free-throw. Michigan won 63-58 and Arnold finished with nine points, all scored in the second half.

“Arnold had two key buckets for us down the stretch, she had five or seven points on that block down the stretch, and that was the difference for us,” said Michigan coach Kevin Borseth.

Things weren’t looking so hot for Michigan when Indiana State guard Brittany Schoen made an NBA-range 3-pointer to put the Sycamores ahead 49-44 late in the second half -- their largest lead of the game. Indiana State was 11-of-25 from 3-point range on the night, led by Schoen's 6-of-11 effort. She led all scorers with 20 points.

“We obviously had to toughen up, being down five,” Borseth said. “And, luckily, they missed some shots, we got some key rebounds.”

While Arnold did her scoring late, Michigan's leading scorer on the night, Nya Jordan, did most of her damage early on, scoring 10 of her career-high 17 points in the first eight minutes of the game. She had scored just four points total in the Wolverines’ previous three games.

“Nya’s one of those kids that’s feast or famine boy, and she was feastin' the first half," Borseth said. "She’s our athlete, she can get to the rim. She made some remarkable plays.”

Also posting a career high for the Wolverines was Jenny Ryan, who had 16 points.

Michigan led by as much as 14 points in the first half, but just 29-25 at the break. The Wolverines (2-2) went on a 10-1 run to start the second half, but found themselves in a 43-43 tie after a string of 3-pointers by Indiana State. The score was tied three times in the final nine minutes of the game until Arnold’s three-point play put Michigan ahead for good.

“Anybody that’s gotta play this team is gonna have their hands full because these kids get after it,” Borseth said of Indiana State.

Michigan will cap off its four-game road trip with a pair of games in Mexico at the Thanksgiving Classic, taking on Buffalo on Friday and Texas A&M on Saturday.
