Baylor sophomore Shanay Washington out for season after tearing ACL

From Baylor:

Baylor’s women’s basketball sophomore Shanay Washington has been lost for 2010-11 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee in practice on Saturday. A date for surgery has yet to be determined.

Washington, a 6-1 guard from Austin, Texas, started 32 of 36 games in 2009-10 and had started all five games this season. She averaged 7.3 points and 3.2 rebounds a game last year and was scoring 5.0 points while hauling down 1.6 rebounds a game in 2010-11.

This marks Washington’s third ACL injury. She tore her right ACL in high school then tore it again while rehabilitating the knee thus requiring a second surgery.

Baylor will apply for a medical hardship waiver for Washington for the 2010-11 season.

“Anytime someone gets injured you hurt for that player,” said Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey. “The most important thing for Shanay is to get the surgery, get healthy and come back strong next year. Since this is her third one, she knows what’s in front of her. Shanay is the type who will work hard in rehab and come back stronger. Obviously, this opens the door for someone to step up, we’ll see who answers the challenge.”
