This "JUNTA OUTTAKES" tape used to circulate in the 1990s. I have no idea, however, if these are in fact studio-recorded "Junta Outtakes." This copy is courtesy of Ellis "of Lemuria" Godard, and it isn't clear who made this for him many years ago. Fwiw, the last few minutes of this Fluffhead are hysterical and must-hear imo.

The jcard of this tape includes Wilson between Golgi and Lizards, but sadly Wilson was not on this tape, and thus is not in this seed. Also, the jcard suggests that the Lizards, Curtain With, and Sloth are outtakes, however, given that (1) there is a sound quality difference between the first four tracks (Fee through Golgi) and the next four tracks (Lizards through Sloth), and (2) there is crowd noise after Lizards and Curtain With, my guess is that the Lizards through Sloth tracks are in fact not outtakes from Junta sessions, but are filler from one or more shows. But I am not sure. Maybe they are outtakes, but there were friends and family in the studio, but I don't think so. If you can identify any of these tracks as being from a particular gig, I'd greatly appreciate it if you let me know (charlie at phish.net) and post a comment here. I just don't have enough early Phish on my iTunes currently to do that myself right now. But my guess is these versions are filler and not outtakes.

There are CUTS in both Lizards and The Curtain With, and they have been lovingly preserved for your nostalgic enjoyment. (Fortunately, the cuts do not occur at inopportune times -- at least imo.)

The Contact on this tape is labeled as unknown filler. It is strikingly similar quality to the Sloth and it wouldn't surprise me if they're from the same gig. I include it here, along with the I Didn't Know (6/20/88) filler on this tape (with Fish on trombone), for their amusement value. This tape also includes several tracks from 8/19/89-1 as filler that I have not included in this seed.

Regarding the Frankstein, Bliss and Backwards Food filler that I put on this seed, I circulated all of it on seeds of other early Phish tapes on bt.etree.org, but I figured I'd circulate them anew in case you hadn't heard them. The a capella "Frankenstein" from Fish is hysterical. This original version of "Bliss," track 11, was dedicated by Trey to Kevin Cecil, a fan who had been shot in the back while walking a friend home in July 1995. He was rendered quadriplegic. Kevin was an engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh at the time. I had made a lot of tapes for Kevin in the mid 1990s and -- if I recall correctly -- I received a copy of this version directly from him (he had received his copy from Trey). He had been given a copy by Trey in 1995, long before Billy Breathes came out. Mike Sofranko (?), Kevin's roommate and another Phish fan, had apparently contacted Phish to let them know what had happened to Kevin. Trey sent Kevin a tape of "Bliss" while Kevin was in the hospital, apparently in or around August 1995. This news made it to Rec.Music.Phish, so everyone knew there was going to be a new song called "Bliss" released eventually, but almost no one had heard it. When "Cars Trucks Buses" debuted in Fall 1995, a few people ignored the description of "Bliss" that had been spread and decided that this new instrumental was "Bliss," and so there were a small handful of Fall 1995 reviews that had "Cars Trucks Buses" listed as "Bliss." For the record. (And I want to thank Herschel Gelman again for emailing me some of this background info in December 2000, because I hadn't recalled all of these details.) Backwards Food for Backwords Folk is a simple but amazing tune that really speaks to me.

If any of this Phish is new to you, enjoy!
