Rasheed Out for the Remainder of the Season

January 11, 2011 | Women's Basketball

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/11/11) - Princeton sophomore Niveen Rasheed will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 women's basketball season.

Rasheed suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury of the right knee on Wednesday, Dec. 29 in a 67-61 win over Davidson.

"As a coach, you feel terribly any time anyone goes down with a season-ending injury, as they all put so much into this game and have a finite collegiate career," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "I feel so sorry for Niveen, but her rehabilitation is already underway and I'm immensely proud of how she's handled this setback and I'm very confident she will come out better after it."

The Danville, Calif., native will undergo surgery later this month.

"Basketball is not a solo journey and at Princeton it's always been a true team effort and collective journey," Banghart said. "Therefore, when ones goes down, there is absolutely an increased responsibility and opportunity for the others, and my staff and I are enjoying watching the collective growth of this group. All Tigers remain committed to our lofty goals and we're all excited for the Ivy journey ahead."

The 2010 Ivy League Rookie of the Year leads the league in scoring with 16.4 points per game. Rasheed leads the team in rebounding with 7.3 boards per game, ranking her second in the league. In addition she leads the league in steals with 29. She is third on the team in assists with 34 and has three blocks. Rasheed averages 14.25 shots per game, and has the second-best free throw percentage on the team with a clip of 76.2 percent. Rasheed has earned two Ivy League Player of the Week honors this season.

Princeton returns to action on Jan. 28-29 when it travels to Brown and Yale, for its first Ivy League road trip of the season.
