Game 7: No. 3 Chattanooga 68, No. 11 Wofford 58

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - No. 3 seed Chattanooga survived a late push by No. 11 seed Wofford to advance to the semifinals, 68-58, at the 2011 Southern Conference Women's Basketball Championship at the McKenzie Arena.

The Lady Mocs will face No. 2 seed Samford Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET. The semifinal matchup will air live on SportSouth.

After falling behind 7-1 to start the game, the Lady Mocs put together a 28-7 run over the next 13:14 to take a 31-18 halftime advantage.

Chattanooga scored the first seven points in the second half and led by as many as 21. The Terriers went on a 17-6 run to cut the lead down to 10 with 1:46 remaining, but a three-point basketball by Bailey Dewart as the shot clock expired and four free throws by Townsend in the final minute preserved the win.

Chattanooga all-conference selection Kayla Christopher led the team with 17 points and four assists.   Townsend and Whitney Hood each finished the game with 11 points while Dewart added seven.

Wofford's Mahagony Williams scored 18 points and pulled down a SoCon season-high 19 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.  Maddie Helms put up 15 and April Moorhouse contributed with 10 for the Terriers.

 

 

Game 6: No. 4 Elon 69, No. 5 Furman 62

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - In the first quarterfinal game in the Saturday session of the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, fourth-seeded Elon relied on strong second half shooting and free throws down the stretch to knock off fifth-seeded Furman, 69-62.

Trailing 54-50 with 5:39 remaining in the game, Elon sparked an 11-0 run to take momentum and close out the Paladins.

Leading the way for the Phoenix was all-conference selection Ali Ford with 25 points, with all her points coming from three-point range (6-for-10) and from the free throw line (7-for-8).  Lei Lei Hairston recorded a double-double for Elon with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Furman (14-16) jumped out to a 12-5 lead to start the game and then used an 8-0 run late in the first half to take the halftime lead, 29-25.  The Paladins' defense forced 16 first half Elon turnovers and managed 20 points off Elon's mistakes.

Kelly O'Conner's three-point basket with 12:18 remaining in the game tied her for the SoCon single season record with 90 three-pointers. O'Conner finished the game with 10 points. Senior Kendra Berry led all Paladins with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Elon (19-11) held a 51-36 advantage on the glass and drained 50 percent of its three-point attempts (7-of-14).

Elon advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2008 to face top seed Appalachian State tomorrow at noon.  The game will be broadcast live on SportSouth.
