Worldwide Moves to Prevent Spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease
Pyongyang, February 15 (KCNA) -- FAO in a recent statement warned all Asian countries of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease from south Korea.

The speed of the spread of the disease in south Korea is unprecedented since the last five decades, the statement said, warning that the disease may spread to all over Asia in case an exodus and the transport of domestic animals take place in Asia on the occasion of the lunar New Year, in particular.

The disease occurred in Bahau of Malaysia recently, infecting more than 100 heads of milch cows. An official in the field of stockbreeding of that country said that at least 300 heads of milch cows and goats are presumed to be infected with the disease in the country, adding that the disease is "imported." Earlier, Japan, Mongolia and various other countries disposed of many domestic animals infected with the disease. It was reported that dozens of buffalos were infected with the disease in Zimbabwe, too.

Steps are now being taken by different countries to prevent the spread of the disease.

The transport and sale of domestic animals are banned in the afflicted areas and the domestic animals inflicted with the disease are killed and the afflicted areas isolated.

Hygienic and anti-epidemic works including vaccination are conducted worldwide to prevent the occurrence and spread of the disease.
