INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Indianapolis women's basketball head coach LeAnn Freeland has announced her resignation to accept a similar position at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
"I appreciate the opportunity Dr. Willey gave me four years ago to be the head women's basketball coach at UIndy," Freeland said. "It has been a wonderful experience and I want to thank all of my former players for their efforts in establishing UIndy as a nationally-competitive program."
Freeland, a former assistant coach at Florida Gulf Coast University, compiled a record of 89-35 (.718) during her four seasons leading the Greyhounds. The 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year led UIndy to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments (2008-10), including an appearance in the 2009 Midwest Regional final.
UIndy finished the season ranked No. 14 in the country in 2010 and No. 24 in 2009, while Freeland's 2010-11 squad was ranked throughout much of the season and reached the championship game of the 2011 GLVC Tournament.
"I'd like to thank Coach Freeland for her service to the University of Indianapolis," Director of Athletics Dr. Sue Willey said. "Her record and accolades were outstanding and while we are sad to see her go, we wish her luck at Nova Southeastern. Coach Freeland kept UIndy women's basketball as one of the top programs in not just the Midwest, but the country, and with that foundation in place I'm excited about the future of Greyhound Basketball."
UIndy Athletics will have an announcement later this week on the future direction of Greyhound women's basketball.
