Importing GPS points and Scale issues.....

Hi, I’m quite new to AutoCAD and importing GPS points into LT is causing me some issues.

I have converted my GPS points to a .DXF file using RapidDXF 4.0; however, when I insert the .DXF file into my model, all of the points are placed 1000s of meters away. I can drag them close (if I can find them) to my original model but the scale/zoom extents are so large, I can no longer zoom into my drawing. Is there another way to place the points on my model?

Please HELP.

Thanks.

From your description, the scale of the drawing in DXF format is not the same as your chosen scale in the DWG file.

AutoCAD works in units, not feet or meters or miles: ensure your DXF's scale ( what is it, something like these  perhaps 1foot=1unit or 1meter=1unit or 1mile=1unit) matches your DWG chosen unit size (not for example 1inch=1unit or 1mm=unit).

Hi Dean, Thanks very much for your response. Unfortunately, like I said I'm quite new to AutoCAD and I have no idea how to make both files the same scale. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Just a thought, Dean...  Could it be that the Civil file that he got the points from has it's origin set real world?  So when he brings in the points, they are a real world distance from ACAD origin?

You need to find out what unit of measurement your DXF file is: if all else fails you can do this in your AutoCAD file after you INSERT the DXF file by measuring a known dimension (DIST command) and scaling the DXF accordingly.

I managed to change the scale on my .dxf block. And although my points where still out in the middle of nowhere, I dragged them into place.

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried using the -DWGUNITS command on both the dxf and the dwg you are inserting into. This may help with the scaling issues and try setting the variables not to automatically scale inserted drawings. In our office we have enough brains to know what to scale our drawings to. Also check your measurement command returns the correct value, should be 1 for metric. If you're still having problems with scaling, try setting the following variables to 0: INSUNITS, INSUNITSDEFSOURCE, INSUNITSDEFTARGET in both the source and target drawing. We insert a lot of survey data into our drawings and incorrect scaling is a constant problem caused by incorrect units settings. Just suggestions so don't shoot me if it doesn't work.
