CHENNAI: Heartbreaks are a part of sports but this one surely hurts like hell for Geethu Anna Jose and her fans. Her dream of becoming the first Indian to play in the WNBA was dashed on Saturday after San Antonio Silver Stars announced they have decided not to rope in the Indian star.
So it's curtains for Geethu's American dreams, at least for this season. "It is heartbreaking, but I'll give it another try next year," said Geethu, like the true fighter she really is.
"Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes called Troy Justice late last night and Troy called me to convey the news. I had so much hope after the Stars tryouts. That was my best chance," she said.
The results of Geethu's tryouts with Chicago and Los Angeles, where she failed to make the grade, were out a couple of days back.
The Kerala girl who lives in Chennai went to San Antonio for the trials on May 3 before the tryouts in Chicago and Los Angeles and had been eagerly waiting for the result.
