I just got done demoing the Switch 2 and boy are my arms tired.

The Nintendo kicked off its new console generation with a very flashy bang. The Verge had the opportunity to go hands-on with the console, testing out a bunch of games and features revealed during yesterday’s direct presentation. I got to play Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Mario Kart World, a little bit of Breath of the Wild, Donkey Kong Bananza and so much more. Here’s our thoughts.

Quick review of Peak Design’s Outdoor Sling.

It can be used on its own but I found it to be the ideal companion to PD’s Outdoor Backpack I reviewed. Detach the padded cross-body strap and the $59.95 2L Outdoor Sling can be secured to the shoulder straps of the backpack where it acts as a chest pouch for quick access to a wallet, keys, drone, phone, glasses, and compact camera. Another advantage the Peak Design ecosystem of bags, packing cubes, and accessories that are designed to work together.

It makes for very quick access to things like a selfie drone.
Its two liter capacity holds a lot. PD also sells a 7L version.
A rear pocket is great for carrying trail snacks for me and my dog.
The long zip cords make them easy to use with gloves.
A closer look at the custom weatherproof zippers from Peak Design.
The gear loops on the Outdoor Sling make it easy to attach using the gear and sternum straps already included with the Outdoor Backpack.
Securing the sling to the backpack shoulder straps.
The sling hangs loosely across the chest so I still used a sternum strap to keep the backpack’s shoulder straps taut on long technical walks.
A closer look at the gear loop on the sling shown attached to the cross-shoulder strap it ships with.
It works as a traditional sling, too.
It can also be thrown over the back.
Peak Design uses an “Ultralight Terra Shell™ 210D” ripstop exterior fabric that’s weatherproof, 100 percent recycled, and Bluesign approved. It’s very lightweight at 177g (0.39 lbs).
The sling’s cross-body strap has a buckle for easy open and close.
The buckle shown opened.
The cross-shoulder strap length can also be adjusted at the bag itself with these locking buckles. It also allows for waist-carry if that’s how you roll.
Yes, it has a (plastic) key lanyard.

Impractical party trick? Most definitely. But if you’re creative, a NFC nail chip is a cool wearable experiment.

Xbox is getting a new Game Hubs feature.

Microsoft has started testing a new Game Hubs feature in the Xbox dashboard that will display game information instead of immediately launching a title. A select number of Xbox Insiders can try this new Game Hubs feature out right now, and it does mean you’ll have to hit A twice to launch games from various parts of the Xbox dashboard.

My new favorite external battery is the one with *two* hideaway cables.

I bought my wife the $110 Anker A1695 “InstaCord” and experienced instant jealousy; and not just because of its retractable cord. It’s the second cable that blew my mind, hidden inside its strong carry handle, plus the fact both are bidirectional. Either can charge the battery, either can charge my laptop; I get passthrough power if I use both! My colleague Richard wasn’t as lucky, saying his battery seems to throttle prematurely, but my wife’s stays cool so far.

The $3,600 keyboard that’s optimized for joy.

I’ve spent the past week typing on an early unit of the Norbauer Seneca, a mechanical keyboard that’s entirely custom, from its Topre-like electrocapacitive switches to its astonishingly smooth stabilizers. I also spoke at length with its creator about the process of making the board and why it’s so damn expensive. Stay tuned next week, feel free to ask about it in the comments, and meanwhile: just look at this keyboard.

A grey keyboard with dark grey modifier keys, white alphas, and pink Esc and Enter keys. It’s a thick, slab-like board that almost looks like it’s cast in cement. It has a coiled cable.
The most expensive keyboard I’ve ever typed on, and also the best.

A quick review of Merrell’s SpeedARC Surge BOA.

This hiking shoe incorporates similar midsole tech as those Nike running shoes that helped so many marathoners break records since 2017. As an avid hiker myself, I had to test Merrell’s new FlexPlate and the promise of “underfoot propulsion.”

Spoiler: It works, and helps reduce foot fatigue over long distances, but the stack height made me feel unstable at times. Oh, and Merrell’s SpeedARC Surge BOAs ain’t cheap at $290.

Merrell’s SpeedARC Surge BOA in the wilds of Luxembourg’s “Little Switzerland.”
The styling is a real departure for the company and a bit too marshmallow-y for my tastes. I do love the orange nylon FlexPlate sandwiched between the midsoles. Merrell says it “delivers 100 percent more energy return than the leading hiking boot.”

For testing, I’d swap back and forth between my trusty Adidas trail runners and new Merrells over a total of 40km (about 25 miles) — I couldn’t wait to get back to the FlexPlate each time.
The FlexPlate prevents things from feeling squishy while also providing a slight but noticeable boost to each step. That propulsion makes the SpeedARC feel lighter than its 14.35 ounce (almost 407g) weight would suggest.
The dual-BOA system is satisfyingly clicky and cinches the shoe tight through a series of turns. The fit is supremely comfortable and secure with the pressure evenly distributed around the foot.

The heal-to-toe stack height of 38-30mm and rubber treaded outsole with moderate 4mm lugs combined to diminish ground feel. The height also made me feel a little unstable when moving quickly over technical obstacles or on steep sloping declines.

The upper is covered in a stretchy, breathable, and abrasion-resistant knit fabric reinforced with Kevlar. This is a dry-weather shoe not to be worn in the mud or rain.
The gaps between the nitrogen-infused midsoles are going to collect mud, dirt, and debris over time.

I’m not a fan of the raised internal stitching used to secure the lowest tab on the BOA cinch system. It protrudes enough that it began to rub on the top of my left foot, just behind the pinkie toe. I was able to alleviate this blister-maker by cinching the shoe more tightly than I wanted. I did not have a similar issue on my right foot which is ever-so-slightly smaller.
Who is the Merrell SpeedARC Surge BOA for? Anyone looking for a breathable, fair-weather shoe that reduces foot-fatigue on long hikes over terrain that’s not overly technical.

A Game Boy for pirates?

The $70 Anbernic RG 34XX is my favorite new way to play Game Boy — but the new RixelHK app lets people use the handheld’s built-in Wi-Fi to browse a huge catalog of games for free. It encourages you to download Nintendo, Sony, and Sega titles, and they appear to be the real deal but unauthorized.

Typically, would-be pirates would need to buy an SD card filled with pirated games or fill a card on a PC, but these Anbernics make downloading games as easy as downloading songs used to be.

I outsourced my memory to an AI pin and all I got was fanfiction

What if Nintendo Switch, but foldable?

Samsung Display’s bendy concept displays are always stunning, if not always practical. But rather than debate just how many compromises a foldable portable would require, or how pricy it might be, I choose to bask in its prototype glory!

This exoskeleton was my secret weapon at CES this year.

Did they rebuild me better, stronger, faster? Not exactly! As I explain in my full story, the Hypershell Pro X made me feel like I had an extra energy tank, like the ones exosuit-wearing bounty hunter Samus Aran obtains in the Metroid games. Oh, and it works when you’re riding a bicycle, too!
