According to the Association of Japanese Animations, the sales of the anime video media in Japan have increased for the first time in five years while the number of TV anime titles has been dropping since 2007. The recovery of the video media sales is attributed to the successful transition of the anime market to Blu-ray, which is more expensive than DVD. Mainichi Newspaper reported that the Blu-ray sales are vital for the success of core-fan oriented anime, which are usually aired after midnight. One of the major anime producers said "Even if the rating of a midnight anime marks 10%, it's doesn't matter for us." Another producer said a TV anime can be regarded as a hit if sales per volume are more than 10,000 copies. dtshyk: this "10,000 copies" means the sales to the retailers, not to the individual customers. Recent Major Hit Titles K-ON! vol.01 Blu-ray 42,625 (DVD 10,326) Angel Beats! vol.1 Blu-ray 27,052 (DVD 13,390) Bakemonogatari vol.01 Blu-ray 58,098 (DVD 23,234) K-ON!! vol.01 Blu-ray 38,452 (DVD 3,981) Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai Blu-ray 21,911 (DVD 5,093) IS: Infinite Stratos vol.1 Blu-ray 27,064 (DVD 9,068) Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica Blu-ray 52,944 (DVD 9,097) One volume of TV anime Blu-ray usually costs 5,000 - 7,000 yen ($62 - $88) for two or three episodes. If you collect all the volumes of one season, it will be around $400 - $500. The high purchasing power of core anime fans has been supporting the TV anime market. Sudo Tadashi, the president of Anime!Anime!, said TV anime produced by popular anime studios like SHAFT and Kyoto Animation sell well because the Blu-rays of their anime are not simple video media but communication tools among the fans. The TV airing of such anime arouses enthusiasm among the audience and stimulates energetic discussions online. People purchase the Blu-ray as a souvenir of the whole excitements. Sounds nice. I've NEVER seen anime on Blu-ray, though. I wonder what they mean by "communication tools among the fans". They make it sound like the fan relationship between the studios and the viewers get closer by just buying and watching the titles. I could be mistaken, though. |

No, it means that what sells gets made. 'Oh, that sold well, let's adapt another series similar to that one'. Touka said: A minimum of $62 for two or three episodes? Oh my God. What rock you been living under? This has been common knowledge for over a decade. Heck, a month ago I spent AU$350 on a Blu-Ray Box Set from Amazon Japan that won't be released until the 27th of this month. The same series on DVD from FUNimation goes for US$25. |

I'll tell you that almost all Blu-Ray anime cost $78-$90 US in Japan, I shop on Amazon Japan a lot. Never seen a $60 Blu Ray anime. The only problem I have with importing anime is the fact that most anime are only in volume format, just give me the damn boxset a few months after the last volume releases. |

And people say R1 / other non-Japanese releases are too expensive because of the presence of English dubs... TreF said: Haha, exactly. Colony Drop and all the other haters that say "This DEEP anime isn't up to my high literary standards, so I'm not going to spend money on it" can go... die in a colony drop. Bring on the "Type B" Otaku who say "OMG Azunyan so moe!!" and plunk down the money on BD, figures, dakimakura, etc.K-ON!! is saving the anime industry. Retro8bit said: That's not the point of the whole article. This is a situation report that basically says that the industry has finally settled down from it's DVD to Blu-ray transition period. Basically DVD's have finally been abandoned massively and BD's are becoming the norm among fans. It's obvious too, DVD is SD so all that HQ-quality anime we see (especially the fansub community) is not what you'll see should you get the DVD version. So we've finally arrived to the point where fans think there's a point for the BD version.I play blue-ray often on my PS3, it's nice and all, but not something I would go overboard to buy. I don't know what they mean by "communicating to the fans" through it but I do know Shaft, for example, dedicates a lot of effort into their BD releases. |

This article appears to be stating the obvious for the most part, such as otaku being the main buyers of anime and DVDs getting shunned in favor of Blu-rays. One situated in the United Kingdom. A place where the prices of anime in Japan don't make the 9 o'clock news. Seriously, it isn't common knowledge so get off your high horse. Having no interest in importing goods from Japan why the hell should I know how much things cost over there? Here in the UK we can get two episodes for as little as 76p so I wouldn't have imagined prices would be so high in Japan. |

I'm glad to hear sales are up. With the number of shows dropping and the new bill passed, you'd think anime is slowly heading to its demise. Glad to see its not heading that way yet. If I can get a show I want on blu-ray, I will. But $70 for two episode is too much. |

This is news? No offense to the news team of course, but when you have people saying they won't watch funimation's simulcast because they are 360p it comes as no surprise that Blu-ray appeals more. A lot of people have long since started to take SD as a personal attack. TreF said: K-ON!! is saving the anime industry. U mad, DEEPfags, anime-is-dyingfags, moehaters & corp.? There would likely be reason to be mad, if it wasn't for the fact that K-ON! was made for that exact intent. Not "saving the anime industry" but appealing to the otaku market by pandering much like anime ripe with fanservice. The reason there has been such a moe spike is because Moe series sell well, and they don't take a large amount of money to animate because a large majority of them are slice of life. It's worth noting that K-ON!! is not saving the anime industry to any extent. It says right before those capitalized blue letters that ignited the flames in your heart (and further fanned it when you saw those letters again) that this is a recent major hit list. But I digress, the point of you saying that wasn't to inspire a rational response was it? |

Jure said: Movement. Don't quote me on this as it is purely speculation, but slice of life series don't tend to use the exaggerated movements that your better written (and even the poorly written ones) action oriented show would use. It doesn't take as much to animate a group of characters standing around and talking/day-dreaming/etc, as it does to animate a giant robot flipping through the air and launching a volley of missiles. To all those complaining about how the industry is dead because they don't make your deep shows anymore or because of the over-presence of moe in the current industry, buy some DEEP blu-rays then. I for one welcome our new moe overlords. More of the same which is more of what I came here for. Jure said: First of all... since when does slice of life have anything to do with animation? And secondly, K-ON is actually very well animated. Much better than your average anime. Slice of Life automatically equals no action which automatically equals no animation Also, I concur with your statement. K-ON! did have surprisingly fluid animation. Despite my qualms with the series, that's something I will agree with. |

Yaaay good news, good news indeed! Profit good, keep at it core-anime fans in Japan! Yes, anime Blue-Rays usually look very good with the better animated ones, and it makes CG look incredible. Although the differences between DVD anime and Blue-Ray anime are not day-and-night like they are with live-action movies, they are far from not making watching anime Blue-Ray's worth it (with the right animes, of course). |

Plus only the blu-ray has 3D capability, I frequent several Japanese blogs for Baby Princess and I didn't hear a single Baby Princess fan even thinking about getting the DVD at all, they all getting the Blu-Ray and 3D, remember it's Baby Princess 3D Paradise [Love] not 2D. I don't even get the reason why they even have it on DVD, nobody in their right mind in Japan would touch it even with a 39 1/2 foot pole. |

Sunrise is milking Gundam/Gintama, Ufotable has KnK, Production I.G. has Sengoku Barasa, basara or however you spell it, Toei has One Piece/Toriko, Pierrot has Naruto/Bleach, Gainax could produce any dementia, sexual, overthetop anime and they will sell plus they are milking Evangelion with the rebuilds, etc. Anime industry won't die as long as each studio has their super popular franchise. |

BlueCyanide said: seriously now they cant blame us downloaders for decline in sales and if they do there pulling numbers out of there arsehole They already are pulling number out of their asses. Recent studies have shown that people who download also buy, perhaps even more than 'regular' customers. And it makes sense, as a lot of them are like 'try before I buy' and will thus do so if they like what they see. of course, there are people who never buy and still download, but those are actually a minority, NOT the majority the industry would like us to believe. Anyway, this article confirms what we knew all along: that otaku are the largest group of anime purchasers and that production studios know what they want. I wouldn't say they are 'saving' the industry, but more that they keep the respective studios afloat. People complain to much about 'moe' selling. The things is, though, it's popular and can be used for almost anything (note: moe =/= fanservice or slice of life, it's usually merely part of it). People treat it as its own separate genre, while it's merely an art style. That a show looks moe, says nothing about its content. Some shows are deep, some are not, regardless of whether a show is moe or not. |
