しいもち (椎黐)

わが国の本州西部、島根県西部から山口県、四国の一部、九州それに中国の中部に分布しています。雌雄異株で、高さは６〜８メートルほどになります。葉は薄い皮質の長楕円形で互生し、先端が尖ります。４月から５月ごろ、葉腋に花序をだして、黄緑色の小さな花を咲かせます。果実は冬に赤く熟します。和名は、樹皮が灰白色で「もちのき（黐の木）」に、また葉が「しいのき（椎の木）」に似ていることから。別名で「びぜんもち（備前黐）」とも呼ばれます。 |

モチノキ科モチノキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Ilex buergeri。英名はありません。 |

"Shii-mochi" (Ilex buergeri) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed in western Honshu, from western Shimane prefecture to Yamaguchi prefecture, part of Shikoku, Kyushu inJapan, and central China. It is dioecious and can reach 6 to 8 m in height. The leaves are oblong with a thin cortex, alternating and pointed. From April to May, inflorescences are borne on the axils and bloom small yellow-green flowers. The fruits ripen red in winter. The Japanese name is because the bark is grayish white and resembles "Mochi tree" and the leaves resemble "Japanese chinquapin". Also known as "Bizen-mochi". |
