David Copperfield was named “Magician of the Century” and dubbed the first-ever “King of Magic” by the Society of American Magicians on Wednesday.
The Las Vegas illusionist, who continues to perform 500 shows a year throughout the world, was given the honor for his efforts to promote and improve the performance and study of magic.
He has previously been named “Magician of the Century” for the 20th Century, but the 100-year-old organization, founded in 1902 by Harry Houdini, has never before named a “King of Magic.”
According to the Society, Copperfield, born David Seth Kotkin, was the first living magician to earn a star on the Walk of Fame, a knighthood by the French government, 11 Guinness World Records and 21 Emmy awards. Copperfield was last listed on the Forbes Celebrity 100 List in 2009, with estimated earnings of $30 million.
