Mr. Driller Burrows Its Way Into The App Store

Namco's Mr. Driller is an arcade game that was first released in 1999.  The game was actually intended to be Dig Dug 3, hence the many similarities, but it ran into a few hurdles and development had to be suspended.  Eventually the game was picked back up and re-worked to be the official Mr. Driller that you see today.  The game has been ported to many other platforms outside of the arcade, and that list now includes the iPhone and iPod touch. mrdriller_screen1Mr. Driller puts the player in the role of a driller, one of which is actually the son of the legendary driller, Taizo Hori of Dig Dug fame, where you must dig down through colored blocks while avoiding falling blocks and  keeping your air supply from running out by collecting air capsules. Mr. Driller features three different control schemes, including an on-screen d-pad, swipe, and accelerometer. It also sports three different game modes, including survival, arcade, and time trial, multiple levels of difficulty, achievements, and Facebook Connect. Mr. Driller is now available in the App Store for $.99.  Maybe Namco has finally figured out that gamers are attracted to low prices from the get-go instead of dropping the price later on, which penalizes the early adopters instead of rewarding them.  Yeah, we're lookin' at you Dig Dug and Pac-Man Remix! Embedded below is the trailer for Mr. Driller.
