地中海沿岸とカナリア諸島に分布しています。わが国へは明治時代に渡来しました。葉は革質の楕円形で、互生します。雌雄異株で、４月から５月ごろ、葉腋に黄白色の花を咲かせます。写真上〜中４は雄花。古代ギリシャ時代から神聖な樹木とされ、芳香のある葉はスパイスや生薬に利用されます。

クスノキ科ゲッケイジュ属の常緑高木で、学名は Laurus nobilis。英名は Bay tree、Laurel。

The Bay tree (Laurus nobilis) belongs to Lauraceae (the Laurel family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands. It was brought to Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912). The leaves are leathery, elliptic and alternate. It is dioecious. The yellowish-white flowers are borne on the axils from April to May. The upper 5 photos are male flowers. This has been considered a sacred tree since ancient Greek times, and its aromatic leaves are used in spices and herbal medicines.
