わが国の北海道南部から本州、四国・九州、それに台湾や朝鮮半島、中国に分布しています。海岸近くの林内や林縁に生え、高さは２〜６メートルになります。葉は楕円形で、ふつう対生します。６月から７月ごろ、葉腋から集散花序をだし、黄緑色から緑白色の花を咲かせます。秋には小さな果実をつけ、熟すと裂けて赤橙色の種子をのぞかせます。塩害にも強いため、庭木として広く利用されています。台湾華語では「日本衛矛」、中国語では「冬青衛矛（dong qing wei mao）」と呼ばれます。 |

The Japanese spindle tree (Euonymus japonicus) belongs to Celastraceae (the Bittersweet family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from southern Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows in coastal forests or woodland edges and can reach 2-6 m in height. The leaves are elliptic and usually opposite. The cymes are borne in the axils and bloom yellowish-green to greenish-white flowers from June to July. The fruits ripen in fall, splitting open and come out reddish-orange seeds when mature. This tree has tolerance of salt damage and widely planted in gardens. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "日本衛矛", and in Chinese, "冬青衛矛" (dong qing wei mao). |
