Product description
A CIRCUS MANAGER'S HIGH-WIRE GIRLFRIEND FALLS FOR A FRENCHAERIALIST. OSCAR FOR BEST PICTURE.
Amazon.com
The Greatest Show on Earth is a heaping helping of flapdoodle served up by one of Hollywood's canniest entertainers: producer-director Cecil B. DeMille. This overripe melodrama purports to be life inside the Ringling Brothers Circus; maybe it's not, but the circus ought to be like this. The actors wrestling with the purple dialogue are: early-career Charlton Heston, as the tough-as-nails circus manager; Cornel Wilde and Betty Hutton as trapeze artistes; and Gloria Grahame (who won an Oscar), dangling from elephants. Best of all, James Stewart plays a clown who--for mysterious reasons--never removes his makeup. (Stewart took the supporting role simply because he'd always wanted to play a clown.) This is a fried-baloney sandwich of a movie: it ain't sophisticated, and probably isn't good for you, but once you start you can't stop. It was the box-office champ of 1952, and it shocked everybody by winning the best picture Oscar. --Robert Horton

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2025This was a wonderful story that brought back the visions of the marvelous people and all the acts of the circus that meant so much to so many. What a wonderful addition to my collection.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2024You can’t go wrong with a Charlton Heston movie & this one is no exception. He & Jimmy Stewart give great performances. You can almost smell the sawdust on the floor. Great story line. Old movies are great movies. Good clean fun for the whole family.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2021If anyone has been down in Sarasota, FLA, and has gone to the Ringling museum, they are familiar with the absolutely amazing story of just what an undertaking that circus was, the enormity of the workforce and maintenance to run, it, etc. And somehow, with what seemed astronomical expenses, back in those days, they were able to make quite a bit of money. Today, of course, it simply would not be possible, just the Zoo portion of what they did would be prohibitively unaffordable.
But it DID happen, and Cecil B. DeMille certainly pays it tribute in this fantastic movie which , on the one hand, shows in detail, just what they had to do, but on the other hand, threw in several romantic triangles and typical repressive sexual overtones of that era, to blend a crafty soap opera to go along with the festivities.
I will show my age with this statement, but back then, woman were WOMAN, with generous figures, completely free of ugly excessive tatooing. And talk about solid male leads, you had Heston, Wilde and Stewart at the helm, each with incredible performances.
This movie has a hypnotic effect with all of the pageantry and colorful scenes, and for many of us who remember that era, a highly nostalgic element for an era that will never be duplicated, due not only to the fact of financial reasons, but because young children today are not as awed by such things, jaded with the over exposure of the net.
this is how great epic movies were made!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2021Watched this as a very young child back in the day and everytime I watch it I enjoy it. A classic beauty!! Those were the days when circus's delighted the senses... now everything is digital. The circus ended a few years ago because of animal rights activists and waning attendance probably due to the interests of people being swayed by other things that stimulate ones imagination. I am thankful that I was raised in an era where wonder and imagination filled the senses and brought smiles to the faces of people and mostly children. It was an era where life was not perfect but somehow much simpler and it wasn't filled with neverending stories of depressing news, drama and problems. Two hours of this allowed me to relive what is now gone for the most part. I am thankful to at least be able to watch movies like this once in awhile and was blessed to have been able to experience the circus as a young girl long ago. It was a memory that will forever stay with me.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2021A classic and a must watch for all ages. I was so thrilled when my parents took me to the circuses, I told them, seriously, I was going to join one, I was after all a contortionist, an athlete, etc. and had my heart set on doing the "ropes" but now I'm disabled and would not be able to attend even if they were still in existence. This was a real treat to me to relive all those wonderful emotions I felt when I was able to go as a child. Charlton Heston has always been a favorite of mine in all his roles, a great actor, especially young and handsome in this one. Good story, good acting, and enough variety of acts shown to substitute for actually going to the circus, so the kids of today can see how much fun it was.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2004Although I've seen this movie only once before (when it was out in theaters in Europe, and I was only about 9 years old), it was one of those I've been waiting for to be released since the beginning of the DVD era. And I was not disappointed in the least: great circus numbers, good performance by the whole cast, and, at the end, the best illustration that could be made of Barnum's motto "The Show must go on". What does not spoil anything, the DVD transfer is flawless; and, with the quality of these 2 and 1/2 hours of pure show at a price difficult to be beaten, there is no reason whatsoever to regret the lack of bonuses.
I've seen many comments complaining about the awarding of 'Best Picture' award (I'm not complaining at all), my only complaint is about the McCarthy insanity (I always thought that he took Hitler's anti-german activities measures as a model for his anti-american activities' crusade) which prevented 'Limelight' from being a nominee in the same year 1952. But what is unbelievable is why all the crap from TV (sorry for redundancy) is deemed more urgent to be released prior valuable movies like this one: I'm not sure that the 175 titles I'm still waiting for (and I know I'm not the only one) will be released before the DVD's 10 years anniversary (only about 30 of them seem to be in preparation at this time).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Circus movie with intrigu.
It was a great movie with insight into all aspects of the circus while at the same time building intrigue. Good actors from those days like Betty Hudson, Cornell Wilde,, James Stewart and Charletan Heston. Good movie to take you away from these hectic times and plant you in those hectic times. Loved it. 😊
