As part of Elk Grove's sister city program, Mayor Steve Detrick has made a humanitarian visit to our sister city, Concepcion de Ataco, El Salvador. Besieged by floods and mudslides following hurricanes, Detrick, who is travelling at his own expense, accompanied a large shipment of clothing and other supplies collected for the people of Concepcion de Ataco.

EGN received an update from Mayor Detrick this morning.

When I arrived in Ataco, we went to one of the sites of home destruction form the landslide after heavy rain, wind and an earthquake. Then we arrived at the Ataco city square were over 500 residents were waiting for our arrival.

It was quite an event. It had both US and El Salvador flags, both national anthem's were played. The district queens and regional elected officials were there, music with special dance performances and several speeches to welcome me.

I closed the formal event with a speech and a proclamation from Elk Grove to Mayor Oscar Gomez. Then we had a dinner celebration for everyone. This was from 5-8 p.m. Some of these folks walked 3-4 miles to attend. This was a very special event!
