The Mercury deserve better fan support than has been the case this summer but I could say that for a lot of WNBA teams.

Why because this is women's sports??? It happens all the time in men's sports...unless they are somewhere where the home team fans would kick their asses (i.e. NY, Boston, Chicago, etc.). Maybe your home team fans should sell out the arena or make it loud enough to drown "about what? 50 people" out!!!!

I wondered if there was merit to this statement but looking at the photos, I'm convinced that very few LA fans were bothered by the Mercury fans. I couldn't find a single person in the crowd that looked the least bit bothered. The Sparks players don't even look like they know they are there.
I doubt that there is any team who is immuned to the fan who is also a poor sport. I am sure the Mercury have their share...as do the Sparks. But from what is said in the blog, I don't think that applies in this case.
Of course, the reaction the Mercury fans had may have been because of the very few times Phoenix wins in LA. It may be the result of many years of dominance by LA in sports. I don't know.
And it may have been a bit classless to chant "Beat LA" if the series had ended with that one win. There is still a game, maybe two, to be played and LA hasn't been beaten yet. The chant still applies.

I find it utterly classless that a Sparks fan would complain about Merc fans cheering and chanting. Caune is right - the last home game, there were at least 40-50 LA fans in my section cheering loudly for their team. Do I get offended? No. I cheer louder for the Mercury. That's the way it works, people!
More LA fans show up at USAC than any other, and have for years! Good for them! I'm glad they're there, spending money in my city and supporting the W.
Caring about a team means that eventually, you will be face-to-face w/a fan of an opponent. Deal with it. If ya can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

It just seems odd that fans would be berated for 1) supporting their team, and 2) being happy after a victory.
I think I must have missed some vital piece of the puzzle that made those fans so classless.
Some of the most fun sports events I have attended have involved interaction with opposition fans.

I find it quite entertaining that this person says this, but his own favorite team felt the need to dance on the other team's logo last year when they won the 1st round series. If that's not disrespectful, I don't know what is.
In the movie A League of Their Own, Tom Hanks makes a sarcastic comment along the lines of "Dozens of people have come to see us play." When I see LA games on tv, that thought always goes through my head. If you don't like other team's fans being louder than yours, then get more fans. And tell them to be louder. Seems pretty simple to me.

Pity this has gone off on a tangent, because Ben York's Open Letter is a pretty good one.
Even makes me want to hit the Qantas website and get my butt over there.

If we were talking about the Suns winning a playoff game in L.A. and handfuls of Phoenix fans drowning the sound of the beaten Laker fans afterward, the rest of the country would be laughing at the Laker fans for letting it happen. Especially once they heard about a whining Laker fan complaining about poor sportsmanship.

Wonder why the author won't authorize comments?
Come to a Phoenix game and see how annoying the LA fans are. It's called competition, obviously something that not everyone has experienced.
