Subject: pidgin-microblog: Plugin is not Twitter API 1.1 Compliant
Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2013 19:16:34 -0400
Package: pidgin-microblog
Version: 0.3.0-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

The Twitter API 1 drop dead date apparently arrived and the previously available access to Twitter was gone.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

I attempted to login as normal to Twitter using Pidgin.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Authentication error. This was similar to what was reported by Wil Wheaton as to his particular client no longer accessing Twitter: https://plus.google.com/108176814619778619437/posts/Bb2biiyguzj

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

     Being able to access Twitter.

Bug is additionally reported upstream at: http://code.google.com/p/microblog-purple/issues/detail?id=269

Subject: The situation so far
Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2013 23:12:28 -0400
So far nothing has been heard from the upstream bug report in terms of
the matter being addressed. See:
https://code.google.com/p/microblog-purple/issues/detail?id=269

Currently the issues the package face are:

* It no longer accesses Twitter
* It no longer accesses Identica
* It still can access independent StatusNet sites but those are limited
to those known & tracked here:
http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/List_of_Independent_Statusnet_Instances

This package is impaired with respect to how it is described
functionally and what it actually can do. Without action upstream
adjustments may need to be made to patch the package to remove the
options that no longer work (Twitter & Identica) while also clearing up
the package description itself. This would be a workable way forward
but the package as it exist doesn't do the majority of what it claims to
be able to do.

Subject: Downstream update
Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2013 18:42:27 -0400
Lubuntu and Xubuntu downstream previously shipped this in their on-disc seed. For their upcoming 13.10 releases this package has been removed. For now this package has **not** been removed from Ubuntu's archive after some discussion.

Uploading a transitional dummy package to smooth upgrades and allow time for upstream to potentially work on fixing the code would be an excellent option at this point. The package is 2/3rds broken as of right now. The remaining functional 1/3rd is not enough to justify leaving the package as-is.
