Minn Post: Miss Saigon Still Angers Some Asian Americans 22-Years Later

The Asian American community protested Miss Saigon 22 years ago.  Unfortunately it is finding itself still protesting it today.

The Minn Post reports the Broadway musical is returning to the Ordway in Minneapolis in October.

Mu Performing Arts is sponsoring a discussion about the production on September 9th at 6:30 p.m.  and it will be open to the public.

Two previous forums targeted only those from the theater community.

Miss Saigon is accused of promoting Asian stereotypes and the Asian characters are often portrayed by white actors. The Ordway’s cast for Miss Saigon has yet to be released on the theater’s website.

“Twenty-two years ago members of the Twin Cities Asian American community held a protest of the touring production of Miss Saigon,” said Mu Peforming Arts in a written statement.  “Since that time, Minnesota’s Asian American community has grown significantly and the issues it faces have matured in complexity. All are invited to attend this opportunity to share knowledge and ask questions about the increasingly complex topic of representation in the arts.”
