Dramatic footage captures cops charging at protesters on Canal Street

Dramatic video has emerged of NYPD cops in riot gear charging a group of protesters on Canal Street on Sunday night — knocking over and detaining at least one person.

The footage shows a line of officers standing about 20 feet from demonstrators who are holding their arms above their heads and yelling, “Hands up! Don’t shoot.”

Matters escalate and the officers — including several supervisors in white shirts — are seen charging the protesters, one of whom is dragged away a little after 9 p.m., according to Storyful.

The videographer, Nate Igor Smith, is heard saying, “Police just attacked everybody for no reason. Holy s—!”

Twitter user @clauirizarry posted video “shortly before the stampede,” saying the scene was “tense but calm.”

It was not immediately clear what prompted police to charge.

The group had earlier stopped in silent protest at the corner of Canal and Church streets, according to amNewYork, which reported that the cops then retreated and the protesters took a knee to recall people killed as a result of police brutality.
