I’m a huge fan of this pack.  Since I got it, its become an essential piece of gear for me.  The beautiful part of it is that it has an almost universal mounting system. I’m sure when I get a new backpackpack, I’ll be able to add it right on.

There’s a reason ALPS Mountaineering has carved out a niche in the Scouting community.  They provide durable gear at an attractive price point, perfect for Scouting families.  The Hex 2 is no exception.  Its not the lightest backpacking tent on the block, but what it lacks in weight savings, it makes up for in durability and price.  Overall, I’m a fan.  This is definitely going with me to Philmont next year.

How a helicopter parent nearly doomed a Philmont trek

It is imperative that parents understand that they will create problems for their child if they are too involved in Philmont Trek prep. During the trek, the scout needs to be rather self sufficient. If the parent does everything for their child before the trek, then the child won’t be prepared to do those things for themselves once they are on the trek.
