Prostate Drug May be Useful for Treating Parkinson’s Disease 1

Wow!!! Collaborating researchers at the University of Iowa and Capital Medical University in Beijing, China, found that a drug used to treat enlarged prostate, terazosin, appears able to slow the progress of Parkinson’s disease!

Researchers looked at men who had both enlarged prostates and also Parkinson’s disease and found that men who took the drug had slower progression of PD.

This was a relatively small sample of patients, so researchers looked at a large number of existing medical records, looking for a correlation to symptoms of Parkinson’s. This data analysis revealed that indeed those who took the drug had lower symptoms than those who took another drug for enlarged prostate.

One very exciting aspect of this finding is that because the drug is already in use its safety is already established. Patients should have access to the drug more quickly. Larger and more rigorous testing of the drug is currently underway in Iowa.
