Rogers Ignite Gigabit Internet FAQs

If you are a Rogers Together With Shaw customer, you’ll need to visit our website for support with our services.

Rogers IgniteTM Gigabit Internet is our fastest internet ever, offering download speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) with unlimited usage so that you have freedom to do everything online that you love —at stunning speeds.

Do I need to upgrade to a new modem to get Rogers Ignite Gigabit Internet service?

You will need the Ignite Gigabit Modem or one of our Ignite WiFi Gateway Modems to support the extremely fast speeds of our Rogers Ignite Gigabit Internet service. The modem rental is included in the price of the service.

If you’re already using a WiFi network name and password to connect to your WiFi devices, you can seamlessly stay connected by using the same network name and password when you set up your new gateway. Just remember, we recommend updating your WiFi password regularly to help protect the security of your home network. Need instructions? Visit this page for support.

What do I need to get my best speeds?

The speeds experienced on different devices in your home will reflect the capabilities of each device, the quality of their connection to the modem over Ethernet or WiFi, other online activities in the home at the same time and other factors.

  • Wired connections (Ethernet): For computers or other devices using a wired connection, you will need a gigabit (1000 Mbps) or better Ethernet port and a CAT5E – not CAT5 – Ethernet cable or better. This will allow for typical speeds between 800 Mbps and 950 Mbps. With a single gigabit Ethernet port, you won’t be able to hit an exact 1000 Mbps because the actual bandwidth available is limited by the overhead required to maintain the connection.

If your computer only has a 10/100 Ethernet port, you will rarely see speeds exceed 95 Mbps for the same reason as above, even if no other equipment in the home is using the home network at that time.

  • Wireless connections (WiFi): You will want to use newer equipment that supports Wireless AC technology (WiFi 5) or the new WiFi 6 (AX) technology. The top speeds you will experience can vary widely between devices, even if the devices support these technologies. In part, this is because of the number of antennas available on a device. Flagship devices usually use 2 antennas for WiFi, whereas mid-tier or budget devices may only use one. Rarely, a device may have 4. Each additional available antenna allows the device to achieve progressively faster speeds.

What might prevent me from achieving my best speeds?

Actual speeds experienced may vary due to the below and other factors:

  • Operating system or driver quality of service features that reserve bandwidth. This is usually why you see results towards the lower end of the speeds listed above. This feature is there to help ensure all the tasks running on your computer or device stay connected and prevent issues with other things you may be running in the background.
  • High network traffic on either the Rogers network, the internet at large, or at the destination site you’re trying to access.
  • Hardware design of the device you’re using, the home networking equipment or the destination network or server that needs to send data back to you.
