The business secretary has warned that the fuel crisis could affect Christmas as he announced the deployment of the government’s reserve tanker fleet to help to deliver petrol to forecourts.

Kwasi Kwarteng said that the tankers would be on the road this afternoon, initially driven by civilians, but that the public could see soldiers driving some vehicles in the coming days.

However, he denied that there was a crisis. He said: “The last few days have been difficult. We’ve seen large queues but I think the situation is stabilising. We’re getting petrol into the forecourts.”
