Fighting escalates as federal ties fray

As Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed calls for a national war, Tigrayan forces mobilise on three fronts

As fighting was spreading eastwards to Afar Region, on 18 July Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared a total war on the Tigray People's Liberation Front, bringing in soldiers from most of the country's 10 regions to boost the federal forces' ailing campaign. 'The enemy we are facing is Ethiopia's cancer,' said Abiy, comparing the TPLF to an Emboch, the fast-proliferating water hyacinth that has clogged up the country's rivers and lakes.
