11.00amSession 1TebayGetting involved in A Modern Civil Service
A Modern Civil Service is the new Government Transformation programme. At it's centre is the idea that we need Civil Servants from across Government to get involved in deciding our future - not just senior decision makers. We'd love to give the Gov Camp community a brief of the programme, hear from you your thoughts and sketch out what a better Civil Service looks like.

GretnaVoice of the customer
Our team are looking at how we can capture the different feedback points we get through complaints, social media, website feedback to build a picture of how customers feel about each service at the council. As well as capturing the data we want to ensure it leads to action and improving experiences for customers. Would be great to hear from other councils and public services on their thoughts on this and how they use customer feedback in their organisation.

Cairn LodgeWhat can public sector organisations do to take collaboration seriously?
We often talk about how important collaboration is in the public sector, but if often feels like empty words. Public sector organisations rarely put any emphasis on collaboration roles or create time for people to do these types of activities. Let's discuss what steps organisations can take to support collaboration in a meaningful way.

RivingtonImproving diversity
having a diverse workforce (in all senses including demographics, professional background, geographic location etc) makes a better organisation. It means (for example) we understand resident's and clients needs better, and end up with more creative solutions. It's easy to recruit from the same networks - how do you think creatively about the what you look for, increase the networks you recruit from, and create more opportunities for progression (grow your own).

Black Swan (noun) - an unpredictable or unforeseen event, typically one with extreme consequences. We can only deal with the issues that we are aware of and have in focus. We also live in an attention economy where diverse agenda compete for our limited attention capacity. DarwenLet people work from home full-time
Pitch context - Senior leaders are "encouraging" us to attend the office more and there is an "expectation" that we will be working 2-3 days in the office from October. The reasons/benefits for this don't seem to have been fully articulated. We have worked from home for over 18 months now and still delivered great pieces of work. Why can't this continue? People should be given the option to WFH full-time, not just 1-2 days a week. We risk turning away highly skilled people because of an archaic approach to working.

Itching to get back to the office? Working from home as much as you can? Just figuring out where you land on the hybrid working spectrum? Whatever your take, you are, like everyone, adjusting to the "new normal". So there's never been a better time to ask: what on Earth does normal even mean any more?

A lean coffee is designed to open the floor to whatever the group wants to discuss. It's a great way to get to the heart of a topic, and make sure everyone's view and voices are counted.

NexerView from the dyslexic side of the screen
The constant ping of notifications, the rush to close 400 open tabs and the overheating of the hard drive after back-to-back Teams calls is the new soundtrack of our working lives. While the ‘new normal’ continues to reveal hidden and previously less-talked about issues, our emerging covid realities also provide a new space to talk about how we can work in new and better ways. When the cog load rises what can we do? And how can these experiences help us to design better?

Lisa Matthews is a Senior Content Designer at Nexer Digital and has been working with words and digital for 25+ years. Before joining Nexer Digital she ran her own content consultancy and has authored or edited nearly a dozen books.

The Workers United Will Never Be Defeated
Inspired by Esko's talk on workplace cultures, I'd love to talk more about brilliant workplaces. Places where workers grow, develop, feel respected and the company thrives - and also where bad management or team environments can be challenged and changed. Would bad workplace cultures be less prevalent if there were more stories and examples of what good practice looked like?

Friends of mine were complaining about retro lengths being extended by the inclusion of games - which they saw as ""enforced fun"" and they dreaded these activities. DarwenHow can we (specifically local gov) avoid becoming trapped in an infinite discovery loop - what are the barriers to progressing to alpha?
Discoveries are really important and it's great to see so many central and local gov organisations running them to better understand problems and user needs. However, in my recent experience it seems that many orgs become stuck in discovery loops as they may not have defined the exit gate well enough or there might be issues with budget or just risk aversion around moving to alpha.

I'd love to hear from folks in gov as to why they might think this is the case (or not if you think I'm wrong) and what (if any) are the barriers to moving to alpha phase and beyond.
