NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – A major traffic shift will go into effect this weekend along one of the busiest sections of I-95. Exit 48, the ramp to I-91, will be moving from the left to the right side of the highway. To continue on I-95 northbound over the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, you will need to be in the left two lanes after this weekend. There will be tow trucks on I-95 in case there are accidents.

Dave Forget has been in the towing business for 18 years. He’s going to be on call this weekend, as construction on the new traffic pattern will begin.

“My job would be to go out and clean up any big commercial wrecks, untangle the four wheelers, try to keep everything moving,” he said.

United Towing of Branford will be on call throughout the entire project. The DOT will have their tow trucks there during rush hour after the new traffic pattern goes into effect. Tow trucks will also be there during the construction. Matthew Pandolfi is the Vice President of United Towing; he will be there overnight on Friday.

“We’re going to be staged at the exit 43 northbound entrance ramp, sitting there for bystanders that break down or quick clearance if there’s an accident,” he said.

This traffic pattern has been in effect for 60 years, and tow truck drivers say they think the change may cause some confusion on the roads. They expect it will be a busy weekend. Though it may be good for business, they don’t want anyone to get hurt.

“People see the tow truck and they hopefully should slow down and follow the cone patterns,” said Pandolfi.

Drivers will see the trucks’ flashing lights on the side of I-95. Tow truck drivers are hoping that will get people’s attention, since they want to keep everyone safe out on the roads.

“We’re doing recoveries and we have to watch trucks, watch our crew and watch cars that are coming at us because everybody’s impatient,” said Forget.
